Diez años después de la caída de Tenochtitlan, en un mundo herido y en silencio, la Madre de Dios se apareció a un indígena macehual en un cerro a las afueras de la ciudad. En cuatro apariciones a San Juan Diego y una quinta a su tío Juan Bernardino, pidió una casita sagrada, sanó, consoló y dejó una señal que nadie ha podido explicar.
Fue el comienzo de la evangelización más extraordinaria de la historia.
Ten years after the fall of Tenochtitlan, in a wounded and silent world, the Mother of God appeared to an indigenous macehual on a hill outside the city. In four apparitions to Saint Juan Diego and a fifth to his uncle Juan Bernardino, she asked for a sacred little house, she healed, she consoled, and she left a sign no one has been able to explain.
It was the beginning of the most extraordinary evangelization in history.

«Aquí se narra» — así comienza el documento más bello escrito en América. Redactado en náhuatl culto por Antonio Valeriano hacia mediados del siglo XVI, el Nican Mopohua recoge los diálogos entre la Virgen y Juan Diego con una ternura que sigue desarmando corazones: «¿No estoy yo aquí, que soy tu madre?».
No es solo una crónica: es una obra maestra de teología en lengua indígena.
“Here is recounted” — so begins the most beautiful document ever written in the Americas. Composed in classical Náhuatl by Antonio Valeriano toward the mid-16th century, the Nican Mopohua records the dialogues between Our Lady and Juan Diego with a tenderness that still disarms hearts: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?”
It is not merely a chronicle: it is a masterpiece of theology in an indigenous tongue.

Un ayate de fibra de maguey que debió deshacerse en veinte años lleva casi quinientos intacto. Una imagen sin trazos de pincel explicables, ojos que guardan reflejos microscópicos, un manto de estrellas que dibuja el cielo de aquel diciembre de 1531.
La tilma no es una pintura: es un códice que sigue hablando — y la ciencia, después de siglos de estudio, sigue sin poder cerrarle la boca.
A cactus-fiber cloak that should have crumbled within twenty years has remained intact for nearly five hundred. An image with no explicable brushwork, eyes that hold microscopic reflections, a mantle of stars tracing the sky of that December of 1531.
The tilma is not a painting: it is a codex that keeps speaking — and science, after centuries of study, still cannot silence it.
✦San Juan Diego
Cuauhtlatoatzin, «el águila que habla», fue el hombre que la Virgen eligió como su embajador: «el más pequeño de mis hijos». Viudo, humilde, caminante de madrugada, llevó las rosas del Tepeyac ante el obispo y el cielo hizo el resto.
Canonizado en 2002 por San Juan Pablo II, es el primer santo indígena de América — y la prueba de que Dios elige a los pequeños para las misiones más grandes.
Cuauhtlatoatzin, “the eagle who speaks,” was the man Our Lady chose as her ambassador: “the smallest of my children.” A widower, humble, a walker before dawn, he carried the roses of Tepeyac to the bishop and heaven did the rest.
Canonized in 2002 by Saint John Paul II, he is the first indigenous saint of the Americas — proof that God chooses the little ones for the greatest missions.
✦Fray Juan de Zumárraga
El primer obispo de México: un franciscano austero, defensor de los indígenas, fundador de hospitales, colegios y de la primera imprenta de América. A él le tocó discernir el milagro. Pidió una señal — y la señal floreció en pleno invierno y quedó impresa para siempre ante sus ojos.
Su testimonio une la jerarquía de la Iglesia con el acontecimiento del Tepeyac desde el primer día.
The first bishop of Mexico: an austere Franciscan, defender of the indigenous peoples, founder of hospitals, schools, and the first printing press in the Americas. To him fell the task of discerning the miracle. He asked for a sign — and the sign blossomed in midwinter and was imprinted forever before his eyes.
His testimony binds the hierarchy of the Church to the event of Tepeyac from the very first day.

She is Patroness of the Americas, Empress of the Americas, Star of the New Evangelization — and every December 12th, the whole world sings to her.
